Beyond the Spotlight & Scoreboard: Smart Tax Moves for Australia’s Sports & Entertainment Stars

By Mark Churchmichael – Head of Tax & Compliance

For many in the dynamic sports & entertainment world, income can swing dramatically, one year a blockbuster deal, the next a quiet spell. And what about those unique expenses, like your stage makeup or that essential team uniform? At Stewart & Smith Advisory, our dedicated Sports & Entertainment Specialty team understands these unique financial realities.

This post unpacks two crucial tax areas often overlooked by performers and athletes, helping you keep more of your hard-earned income.

Smoothing Out the Highs & Lows: Income Averaging for “Special Professionals”

Ever had a big year, then faced a massive tax bill that felt unfair? Income averaging is your secret weapon! The ATO recognises that careers in sports and entertainment often have significant financial peaks and valleys. This provision allows eligible professionals to ‘smooth out’ their taxable income over a five-year period.

Are You a “Special Professional” in the ATO’s Eyes?

  • Sportspersons: Professional athletes, certain coaches, umpires, generally those whose primary skill is physical prowess, strength, or stamina.
  • Performing Artists: Actors, musicians, dancers, singers, even influencers and presenters, anyone using artistic skills in the production of a work.

The Benefit? If you have a banner year (or several!), income averaging helps prevent you from being pushed into a much higher tax bracket for that single year. Your tax is calculated at a more concessional rate on the “above-average” portion of your income, leading to a fairer overall tax burden across your career. It’s designed to manage your cash flow, ensuring tax doesn’t disproportionately hit your peak earning years. This can make a substantial difference to your overall financial well-being.

Decoding Deductions: What Can You Really Claim for Wardrobe & Grooming?

This is where it gets tricky, as the ATO is strict! While personal grooming and everyday clothing are generally not deductible, there are specific, often missed, exceptions for your professional needs.

For Performers (Actors, Musicians, Presenters, etc.):

  • Red Carpet & Award Show Attire: Conventional formal clothing (suits, dresses) for these events is not deductible, as the ATO considers them private wear, even if only worn for work.
  • The Key Exception: Costumes & Stage Makeup: You can claim for costumes specifically purchased or hired for a particular role or performance, provided they are not used for private purposes. Similarly, stage makeup (and essential cleansing materials for its removal) is deductible if explicitly required for a performance or role.

For Sports Stars (Athletes, Coaches, etc.):

  • Training & General Gear: Everyday activewear, running shoes, and general training clothes are not deductible.
  • Crucial Exceptions: Uniforms & Protective Gear: Distinctive Compulsory Uniforms: The cost of buying, repairing, or cleaning your official team or club uniform (e.g., jersey with logo, specific colours/style) is generally deductible. This can sometimes extend to specific shoes, socks, or jumpers if they are an essential part of the distinctive uniform and the employer’s policy specifies the exact type. Protective Clothing: Essential safety gear worn to protect from real and likely risk of injury (e.g., headgear, mouthguards, shin pads, specific studded boots for your sport) can be claimed.
  • Laundry & Dry Cleaning: You can claim for laundering any deductible work-related clothing (i.e., compulsory uniforms or protective gear). The ATO allows a reasonable basis for calculation: $1 per load if only work clothes are washed, or 50 cents per load if mixed with personal items. Remember to keep records!
